Race Details

Date: Monday August 29th 2016
Start Times: Half Marathon Start Time 0900. The 10k Start Time is 0910

Event Base
The event base provides parking, toilets, changing area, registration office, onsite refreshments, start /finish area.  It is at the following location;-

Directions to Event Base
From A470 take the B4273 sign posted Ynysybwl.  Follow B4273 straight through Ynysybwl High Street. Approximately 3k after Ynysybwl centre take the road left, signposted Llanwonno / Ferndale.  Continue up through forest for 2k to the Brynffynon Pub, then turn left straight after pub.  After 500m turn left down small forest track to event base / car park (signposted). 

From A4233 head to Ferndale.  At Ferndale take Station Rd across river. Continue on Station Rd. past switchbacks then onto Commercial St.  Just before mini roundabout take sharp right uphill onto Blaenllechau Rd. Continue uphill then just before the Brynffynon Pub turn right.  After 500m turn left down small forest track to event base/car park (signposted). 

Registration
All marathon competitors must register between 0730 and 0840 on the morning of the race.  For 10k competitors you must register by 0850.  At registration you must present compulsory safety kit, complete the required health and safety forms (provided on the day), provide emergency contact details and mobile phone number and collect your race number.

Start
The half marathon will start at 0900.  The 10k start time is 0910.  Once you have registered please make your way to the starting area.

Route overview
The marathon race starts with a short lap of the event field before heading off into the Forest.  Underfoot, the route is fully off-road with approximately 600 meters of ascent over muddy, wet, single tracks and dry, harder forestry trails, therefore suitable footwear for fell and trail running is vital.  The course is fully marked and marshalled.

The 10k route starts at the same point but does not have a lap of the event field, instead it heads straight out into the forest.  When you return both routes will have a lap of the event field to finish.  For 10k competitors make sure you follow the signs where your route splits from the 1/2 marathon course at approximately 5k.  This point will be clearly marked and marshalled and comes after the second water station/checkpoint.

Entrant requirements / abilities
Entrants must be in a fit and healthy condition to be able to complete the distance within the given time periods and cut-off times.  The course shuts for both courses at 1pm. This gives you 4 hours for the half-marathon. You will be required to carry the compulsory kit list for duration of the event.  You should select the route most appropriate for your abilities and have performed the appropriate training.

Compulsory safety kit
The race location is close the Brecon Beacons and is subject to mountain weather systems.  The safety kit may seem unnecessary but weather conditions can change suddenly and wind, rainfall and temperature changes are similar to those in the beacons.  In 2014 the majority of competitors were wearing most of the safety kit at some point!  For your safety and as part of our race licence competitors must carry / wear the following:
Footwear Suitable for Trail Running
Full Body Waterproof Clothing-Top & Bottoms (this may be relaxed to windproof if conditions permit)
Whistle
Mobile Phone
Emergency blanket / bag (no cut down versions please)
Food / energy products suitable for your anticipated time for the completion of the event

Checkpoints
There are 3 checkpoints on the marathon and 2 checkpoints on the 10k course that will provide water.  They will be provided in plastic cups.  Please drink the water at the checkpoint and dispose of the cups in the bins provided.  The water stops are at 6k, 11k and 17k on the half marathon course and 3k and 7k on the 10k course.  You may bring your personal water bottle with you to fill up should you want water to take with you around the course.

For safety, there are also various control points around the course where your number will be recorded by a marshal, please be ready to call out your number at these points.  They will be marked on the course as you arrive to the control point.

Road crossings
There is one road which you will cross twice; once on the way out to the main forest area at approximately 4.5k and secondly on the way back at approximately 19.5k on the 1/2 marathon and at  1.3k and 9k on the 10k.

The road is crossed at the same location on the way out and way back and it will be marshalled.  However, please remember it is your responsibility to cross the road safely and not the car drivers or marshals responsibility to stop the car for you!

Retirements
It is essential that any retired runners report to a race marshals as soon as possible.  Please do not leave the event before you have recorded your number with the race organisers.  Failure to report to a race official when you finish the race may instigate a search by police and mountain rescue and a potentially hefty bill for yourself!

Spectators
Spectators will be able to view the start and finish area on the event field.  There are many beautiful walks around the forest that may provide some short entertainment.

Arriving / Leaving the event
Please drive sensibly when leaving and approaching.  There is parking provided at the event base, however to minimise our ecological footprint we ask you to car share as much as possible.

Countryside Code
Please follow the countryside code.  We hope to make this an annual event so don’t spoil it by dropping litter! Please stay on the designated tracks and trails on the race route.  The forest is used by many people including walkers (some with dogs), horse riders and cyclists so please be mindful of them. 

Minor emergency
There are qualified first aiders at the checkpoints and at the start and finish area. There is also first aiders who will be patrolling the forest in two vehicles.


Minor emergency
Minor emergencies such as sprains, strains and fatigue, put on your warm kit and eat something then make your way to the nearest checkpoint and ask for assistance.  Inform any other runners who can then pass the message onto the nearest marshal.

Major injury
In a major emergency (one where you are unable to make your way to the next marshal) you should put on your warm kit immediately, inform other runners and call the race organiser. Make your-self as visible as possible.  Alert a marshal by either passing a message along the race line, calling / phoning for help or using your whistle.  We will get someone to you as soon as we can and identify where you are so we can direct emergency services to you.

If another individual is in need of major emergency assistance you must help.  Failure to do this will result in expulsion from the race.

If you have to summon a Mountain Rescue Team or Emergency Services. Dial 112 or 999. For Mountain Rescue ask for police, then ask the police for mountain rescue. For Ambulance ask for ambulance service. Tell them where you are, tell them the problems, keep your phone switched on. 


Emergency Distress Signal
Six long blasts on your whistle.  Stop for one minute.  Repeat.
Carry on the whistle blasts until someone reaches you and don't stop because you've heard a reply – rescuers may be using your blasts as a direction finder.
