SW 100 & 50 Route Information

The race starts in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, then briefly heads North out of the city along the Taff Trail passing Castel Coch.  Runners will then head west up the Garth and follow the (Ogwr) Ridgeway walking route passing through Llantrisant. At Glynogwr they will head North through Ogmore Forest over Mynydd William Meyrick to Bwlch Y Clawdd at the head of the Ogmore Vale.

Following the Maendy trail down to Treorchy where they cross the Rhondda Valley before heading steeply up through forestry trails to Mynydd Maerdy and Mynydd Cefn-y-Gyngo to Hirwaun.   From Hirwaun the route picks up the old railway line to Penderyn as it heads into the Brecon Beacons National Park. Some amazing forestry running amoungst waterfalls, runners will cross the river Afon Hepste at Sgwd y Elra.  The route briefly follows Afon Mellte through the forest before heading to the more exposed summitts of the Brecon Beacons. Fan Llia is first, continue on the Beacons Way with stunning views across the central Beacons   before dropping down to the the half way point next to the Storey Arms outdoor Centre. It is here where the 50 mile route joins the 100.

Runners will ascend Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big before continuing along the ridge to Carn Pica where they follow a long downhill to Talybont reservoir.  Tor y Foel is next before dropping down across the valley eventually picking up the small 2 k road section to Trefil.  Next is Tredegar, passing through Parc Bryn Bach to climb over Rhymney Hill. Runners will then tag the trig point at the top of Mynedd Bedwellty and drop down to New Tredegar.

Following around the edge of Bargoed to Geligear Common, then through Gelligear  itself to Parc Penalta. The route skirts Mynydd Eglwysilan, drops down through forests to Llanbradach where it crosses the River Rhymney. Runners head up to Mynydd Y Grug then drop down towards Bedwas. Where they will pick up a small section of off road cycle path and then some flattish running through fields and woodland to Rudry. Runners head over Rudry common then through The Warren Forest to the top of Caerphilly Mountain.  Finally you will meet up with the Ridgeway Walk again, over Crag y Alt before regaining the Taff Trail and heading back to Cardiff via Castle Coach and the route you came out on.
